The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Raymond W. Hanson (ASN: US-55034524), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 14 October 1951 in the vicinity of Songhyon-ni, Korea. On that date Company A launched an assault on dominating hills defended by a well-entrenched and determined hostile force. Corporal Hanson’s platoon was on the left flank and came under a heavy concentration of small arms and machine gun fire from an enemy machine gun emplacement. Corporal Hanson, realizing the seriousness of the situation and completely disregarding his own safety, assaulted the hostile bunker throwing grenades and firing his rifle. Despite the intense enemy fire directed at him, he continued his action until he succeeded in destroying the emplacement and killing the occupants. At this time he was fatally wounded by fire from another enemy bunker. His dauntless courage and self-sacrificing devotion to duty were an inspiration to his comrades and enabled them to continue the attack and secure their objective. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Hanson on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
