Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 24 (January 27, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William P. Hanrahan (ASN: 0-948033), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 29 November 1950, Lieutenant Hanrahan was platoon leader of a machine gun platoon in a motorized convoy proceeding between Majon-ni and Tongyong, Korea. The convoy came under intense fire from a well-entrenched and cleverly camouflaged enemy. Lieutenant Hanrahan, at the time, was with the leading platoon. He moved to the nearest gun and directed its fire on the enemy guns which were inflicting the most damage. In so exposing himself he was hit by enemy fire in the arm, neck, and head. Despite his painful wounds he remained with his platoon until he had led them all to positions of safety. He then returned to the original area and assisted in removing weapons, ammunition, and wounded personnel. Only after the successful accomplishment of this mission and the treatment of all other wounded personnel would he accept medical treatment himself. The selfless devotion to duty, heroic actions, and gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Hanrahan on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
