Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 105 (December 16, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Jack Hanley (ASN: RA-39337077), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 37th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 31 August 1950 and 1 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changyong, Korea. During this period Sergeant Hanley was in a forward observation post directing artillery in support of an infantry regiment. The enemy launched a strong attack which forced the infantry to withdraw. During the ensuing action the officer occupying the observation post with Sergeant Hanley was wounded. While members of a withdrawing rifle company were removing the wounded officer, Sergeant Hanley voluntarily and courageously elected to remain at his post in an attempt to cover their withdrawal. He held off the advancing enemy while the evacuation of the wounded officer was effected and thereafter continued to deliver fire against the enemy until his position was overrun and he was killed. The gallantry and devotion to a fallen comrade displayed by Sergeant Hanley reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
