Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 16 (January 3, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John R. Hall (ASN: RA-13287297), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 8th Field Artillery Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 September 1950, a company attack on a hill in the vicinity of Chindong-ni, Korea, was stopped by heavy rifle and machine gun fire from strongly entrenched enemy. One soldier advanced alone toward the foe in an effort to silence the chief weapon delaying the attack but was mortally wounded as he neared the objective. Private First Class Hall, a member of a forward observer group, rushed forward in the face of intense machine gun fire and a barrage of hand grenades to administer first aid to his fallen comrade. Finding that the soldier could not longer be helped, Private First Class Hall brought the body back to the company position. Private First Class Hall’s conspicuous courage and selfless devotion to the welfare of his comrade reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
