The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Oscar P. Hagan (ASN: 0-1328999), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 31 March 1952, the 3d platoon of Company B was given the mission of assaulting and holding O.P. Kelly, near Koyangdae, Korea. With the lifting of the friendly artillery barrage, the assault squads moved toward their objective. As they neared the halfway point they were subjected to a withering hail of automatic weapons and small arms fire. After returning the fire Lieutenant Hagan received orders for his platoon to withdraw so as to enable the friendly artillery to once again bombard the objective. As they were withdrawing the enemy concentrated a heavy artillery and mortar barrage on the patrol, resulting in several casualties. Lieutenant Hagan, immediately cognizant of the critical situation, ordered his platoon to seek cover and return the fire while he directed the evacuation of the wounded. Observing a wounded man lying in an exposed position, Lieutenant Hagan completely disregarded his own safety as he dashed across the shell-torn terrain and calmly and fearlessly carried the man through the withering enemy fire to safety. During the ensuing barrage Lieutenant Hagan was seriously wounded but, although exhausted from loss of blood, he refused medical attention until he was able to reorganize his men and achieve an orderly withdrawal to friendly lines. His outstanding leadership and gallantry reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
