The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Carl F. Haberman (ASN: 0-12857519), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 13 February 1951, in the vicinity of Chipyong-ni, Korea. On that date he was a platoon leader in Company G which was under severe enemy attack. When the numerically superior enemy succeeded in penetrating the friendly lines and subjected the rear of his unit to intense small arms and automatic weapons fire, Lieutenant Haberman immediately organized a squad and led a counterattack in an attempt to retake the lost ground. When the advance of this squad was bogged down under intensified enemy fire, Lieutenant Haberman with complete disregard for his personal safety, started forward alone, which so inspired his men that they followed him and successfully routed the enemy from the area of penetration. The gallant conduct displayed by Lieutenant Haberman on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.

Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 298 (July 16, 951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Carl F. Haberman (ASN: 0-12857519), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 16 and 17 May 1951. in the vicinity of Chaun-ni, Korea. On those two dates, he was executive officer of an infantry company which was attacked by numerically superior enemy forces. Under a withering hail of enemy mortar and automatic weapons fire, one of the platoons in the unit suffered numerous casualties, including the platoon leader. When he received the information that the platoon leader was wounded and that several gaps had developed in the lines, Lieutenant Haberman immediately organized a platoon, consisting of cooks and drivers, and personally led them from the rear command post to forward positions to fill in these gaps. Upon arrival at the forward position, he found the men in confusion and disorganized. With complete disregard for his personal safety and under intense enemy fire, he reorganized the group and took command of all of the troops in the immediate area, personally leading them in their attacks and directing their fire during the remainder of the action. His courageous actions under enemy fire contributed materially to the successful repulse of the enemy’s attack. The gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Haberman reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
