The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Captain (Medical Corps), [then First Lieutenant] Rolf M. Gunnar, United States Army, for heroic achievement as a member of the Medical Detachment, Division Artillery, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 July 1951 in the vicinity of Yangji, Korea. On that date Captain Gunnar, upon learning that a seriously. Wounded man was lying exposed to enemy fire, voluntarily left a position of relative safety to administer medical attention to the wounded man. In so doing Captain Gunnar moved through intense enemy artillery fire, completely disregarding his own safety. Upon reaching the wounded man, he immediately rendered medical aid, in spite of the many enemy shells exploding in his vicinity. As a result, the wounded man was safely evacuated to the battalion aid station. The heroism in action and outstanding devotion to his comrades demonstrated by Captain Gunnar reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
