The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Willard H. Grubbs (ASN: US-53010510), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 4 October 1951, near Chungse-Re, Korea, as elements of Company C were attacking a well-entrenched enemy, radio communications were out and the need for additional litter teams was desperate. Corporal Grubbs, acting as platoon runner, realizing this necessity, courageously made his way through 500 yards of terrain under intense small arms, artillery and mortar fire to reach the forward aid station for additional litter teams. After covering about half the distance back to his platoon, numbers of litter team were wounded, but Corporal Grubbs continued with a load of ammunition to his comrades and unhesitatingly returned to the aid station for additional litter teams. Corporal Grubbs’ gallantry and bravery reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
