The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Owen R. Grogan, Jr. (ASN: 0-63052), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 31 March 1951, near Kanpa-ri, Korea, Captain Grogan’s company was attacking a series of well dug-in, well camouflaged enemy emplacements on Hill 587, when his unit was pinned down by intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire. Captain Grogan, directing the attack, deliberately and continuously exposed himself in order to draw the enemy fire and thus disclose enemy emplacements to his men. At the same time he directed accurate and effective artillery fire on the enemy dugouts. Later on during the action Captain Grogan again exposed himself to intense enemy fire in order personally to direct evacuation of the wounded in his company. Captain Grogan’s gallantry, courage, and professional skill reflect great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service.
