The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class William L. Grimes (ASN: RA-6998894), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. When his squad was attacked by a large enemy forcer on 31 August 1950, near Haman, Korea, Private First Class Grimes skillfully directed the squad’s withdrawal; heedless of the heavy hostile action, he moved through the intense fire to control and supervise his men, After reaching safety and finding several wounded men had not bee recovered, he returned to the fire-raked area and successfully evacuated the men to the rear. Private First Class Grimes’ outstanding courage, leadership and military ability are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
