Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 454 (November 28, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Austine F. Grigsby (ASN: 0-2003300), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 13 and 14 September 1952 in the vicinity of Kanam-dong, North Korea. On those dates, Lieutenant Grigsby, leading a twelve man patrol, had the mission of cutting an escape route to a Regimental Intelligence and Reconnaissance Platoon that had been ambushed and surrounded by a numerically superior enemy force. When the friendly patrol reached the proximity of the enemy ambush, Lieutenant Grigsby, showing outstanding tactical skill, deployed his men and moved to within 15 yards of the enemy. Using the element of surprise, the friendly patrol opened fire upon the enemy and succeeded in routing the hostile force. Taking advantage of the enemy’s disorganized flight, Lieutenant Grigsby moved his patrol forward and successfully fought his way through two more enemy groups until he had reached the entrapped Intelligence and Reconnaissance Platoon. Organizing both units, he started back toward the Main Line of Resistance. When they were only a short distance from the friendly lines, Lieutenant Grigsby’s advance scouts informed him that enemy forces had circled to their rear during the previous encounter and were now in positions approximately 30 yards to their front. Realizing they were dangerously low on ammunition, he ordered his men to take cover, and then with complete disregard for personal safety, moved to a position forward of his men and effectively adjusted artillery fire upon the hostile forces, killing many of the enemy and dispersing the remainder. Lieutenant Grigsby’s fearless leadership so inspired his men that they not only saved the Intelligence and Reconnaissance Platoon from annihilation, but also accounted for 32 known enemy dead and an estimated 12 enemy wounded. Lieutenant Grigsby’s superior acts of gallantry and consummate devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
