Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 76 (March 24, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Thomas J. Griffith, Jr. (ASN: RA-23900109), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 3d Reconnaissance Company, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 18 January 1951, in the vicinity of Kumyangjang-ni, Korea, a patrol of which Corporal Griffith was a member came under heavy mortar and small arms fire from a numerically superior enemy force. A member of the patrol fell seriously wounded. Without regard for his personal safety, Corporal Griffith fought off the approaching enemy until first aid could be given and then helped carry the wounded comrade to a litter vehicle. Seeing his own vehicle in danger, he returned through the enemy fire to save it. Although now wounded himself, Corporal Griffith continued his efforts until a mortar round destroyed the vehicle. Even then he continued his attempts to save valuable equipment from falling into enemy hands and did not withdraw until ordered to do so. Corporal Griffith’s concern for the welfare of his men and his courage under fire are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
