Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 154 (June 15, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert J. Griffith (ASN: 0-2262322), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a member of Company I, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 9 April 1951, near Hwachon, Korea. ON that date his company was attacking a hill southeast of Hwachon Reservoir. During this attack, the point man was severely wounded and was being fired upon by the enemy. Seeing that the wounded man’s life was in danger, Lieutenant Griffith went to the aid of the man, and in so doing was wounded in the leg. Disregarding his wound he continued on his way. Upon reaching the fallen man he lifted him to his shoulders, and attempted to carry him to a covered position. As he started on his return trip, a burst of machine gun fire struck him in the legs, making it impossible for him to continue. The gallant conduct of Lieutenant Griffith reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
