Department of the Army, General Orders No. 46 (July 2, 1948)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Thomas Norfleet Griffin (ASN: 0-17775), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 395th Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division, in action in Germany on 30 April 1945. While attacking across the Isar River, elements of the 395th Infantry Regiment and of the 14th Armored Infantry Regiment became intermingled. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Colonel Griffin crossed the river under shell fire and, with disregard for personal safety and in direct view of the enemy, proceeded through heavy concentrations of direct, heavy-velocity artillery fire, issued orders on the sot, and supervised their execution. As a result of Colonel Griffin’s fearless action, the two units were disentangled in a minimum of time and his regiment moved forward quickly to capture its objective. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Griffin, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
