The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Staff Sergeant Jonathan E. Clay, United States Army, for valorous achievement in action while directly engaging 50 anti-Coalition militia forces during an ambush in the Hawari District, Afghanistan on 9 October 2006. Sergeant Clay’s courage, professionalism and dedication to duty prevented the loss of life to both United States and Afghan National Army soldiers. Without regard for his own safety, Sergeant Clay exposed himself to direct enemy fire while providing suppressive fire in order for the convoy to break contact. His dedication and selfless service are in keeping with the highest tradition of military service and reflect distinct credit upon himself, the Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan, the United States Central Command, and the United States Army.
