On 31 March 1951, near Kich-on, Korea, Lieutenant Gregory, during a withdrawal of his company, remained behind to see that every man possible withdrew safely. He was following his company when one of his infantrymen was wounded by the enemy fire and unable to move further. With complete disregard for his personal safety and heedless of the intense automatic weapons fire directed at him, Lieutenant Gregory ran to the aid of the stricken man, lifted him upon his back and carried him to the safety of a covered position. Lieutenant Gregory’s heroism, courage, and presence of mind reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Arthur L. Gregory (ASN: 0-2020725), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 28-29 November 1950, near Sackang-ni, Korea, the 3d Platoon, Company C, 1st Battalion, was on the outer perimeter of the company position when it was attacked and overrun by a numerically superior enemy force. Although the position was infiltrated, Lieutenant Gregory immediately set about reorganizing his platoon’s positions. To check the men remaining in his unit, to reassure them, and to encourage those with little or no combat experience, he moved from position to position constantly exposing himself to heavy small arms, automatic weapons and mortar fire. He further consolidated his infiltrated positions by personally moving forward of the positions which were still under heavy fire and, by throwing hand grenades, forced the enemy to withdraw some distance. Later in the night when company communications were badly disrupted, he laid down an effective covering fire while his first squad withdrew from a particularly vulnerable position. This action enabled his entire platoon to consolidate and to link positions with the 2d platoon reestablishing the perimeter. Lieutenant Gregory’s courage leadership, gallant actions, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.

    Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 98 (April 12, 1951), Corrected by G.O. 101 (1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Arthur L. Gregory (ASN: 0-2020725), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 10 February 1951, in the vicinity of Sansong-ni, Korea, strong enemy forces in well dug-in positions had pinned down Company C by employing concentrated automatic weapons and small arms fire. In an effort to get his men to move forward, Lieutenant Gregory ran across open terrain through a hail of fire, picked up a light machine gun, carried it forward fifty yards and put it into action. He then stood up and with complete disregard for his own personal safety exposed himself to this heavy fire, shouting to his men to move forward. Inspired by their commanding officer’s actions the company began the assault. At this time the leader of the assault platoon was shot. Lieutenant Gregory without hesitation again ran through the heavy crossfire to go to the assistance of the wounded platoon leader. During this heroic effort he was wounded in the leg and his clothing was riddled by enemy fire. Lieutenant Gregory’s gallantry was an inspiration to all and is in in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
