The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Robert G. Greer (ASN: RA-16264836), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 503d Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 30 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. On the night of that date Sergeant Greer’s battalion was displacing rearward to new defensive positions when the motorized column was attacked by enemy forces in regimental strength. From commanding ground overlooking the escape route, the enemy poured intense mortar, machine gun and small arms fire into the halted vehicles and the personnel who had sought cover in ditches along the road. Sergeant Greet, with complete indifference for his personal safety, seized a 3.5-inch rocket launcher and, assuming an exposed position, fired into the enemy emplacements. The blast from his rocket launcher disclosed his position to the enemy who took him under heavy fire and wounded him. Disregarding his pain and the heavy fire striking all about him, he continued to fire his rocket launcher and destroyed two hostile machine gun positions before his ammunition was exhausted. His heroic action caused his comrades in his vicinity to rally and to repel the onrushing enemy, thus enabling them to continue on through the roadblock. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Greer reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
