The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Thomas Patrick Greene (ASN: 0-62556), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 10 February 1951, in the vicinity of Sansong-ni, Korea, the Third Platoon of Company C, 1st Battalion, attacking a heavily entrenched hostile force on Hill 520, was pinned down by intense fire from an enemy emplacement. Two riflemen of the platoon, in a slightly forward position, were greatly endangered by the vicious hail of hostile fire and unable to escape to safety. Lieutenant Greene, seeing their hazardous situation, voluntarily moved forward across the embattled terrain to their position and ordered them to withdraw, as he poured a steady stream of rifle fire at the enemy to cover their retreat. During this bold action, as he fearlessly drew the enemy’s attention to him, Lieutenant Greene was mortally wounded by a sniper’s bullet. The conspicuous gallantry and steadfast bravery exhibited by Lieutenant Green reflects the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the most esteemed traditions of the military service.
