Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 701 (November 10, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William M. Glasgow, Jr. (ASN: 0-56771), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, distinguished gallantry in action on 21 and 22 September 1950 in the vicinity of Hyopchon, Korea. On that date Lieutenant Glasgow’s platoon was in a defensive position atop a hill which came under heavy enemy attack, the main part of which was centered on his position. After several fanatical assaults by the enemy, the platoon commanded by Lieutenant Glasgow was forced to withdraw. Immediately he took up a machine gun which had been abandoned and directed a devastating base of fire on the attacking enemy, temporarily halting him. By this pause in the attack he was able to regroup his platoon, thereby keeping Company B’s position relatively intact. Later when the Company Commander was killed by enemy fire, Lieutenant Glasgow took command of the company and launched a counterattack to regain the lost ground. During this action he was wounded and evacuated. The gallantry and inspiring leadership displayed by Lieutenant Glasgow reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
