Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 77 (September 28, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Darold R. Freeman (ASN: RA-19325451), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 October 1950 near Chung-Bolgok, Korea, Private Freeman left his truck and moved into the road in the face of heavy enemy small arms, automatic weapons and hand grenade attack to cover the displacement of his platoon. Although half blinded by grenade wounds, he delivered effective fire on the enemy, attempted to evacuate his wounded platoon sergeant and resolutely continued his mission until new positions were secured. Private Freeman’s courage, determination and selfless devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
