The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Joseph Henry Franklin, Jr. (ASN: RA-13166430), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 18 August 1951 in the vicinity of Yanggu, Korea. On this date Company F was subjected to the intense hostile mortar and small arms fire which inflicted numerous friendly casualties. Sergeant Franklin, platoon sergeant, realizing the seriousness of the situation, immediately ordered a withdrawal. Braving the hostile fire he exposed himself to the enemy while setting up a defensive action to effect a withdrawal. His skillful maneuvering resulted in an orderly withdrawal without further casualties and the safe evacuation of all the wounded men. After reorganizing the depleted ranks, Sergeant Franklin led his men in a counterattack upon the hostile positions. Through his aggressive leadership the enemy was routed from his positions and the objective was successfully secured. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Franklin on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
