Having accomplished his mission of guiding a new company commander to his company’s positions, Private Finney was returning to the battalion forward command post when he discovered a rifle platoon being subjected to intense enemy automatic weapons and heavy mortar barrage. Realizing that the platoon was without leadership, Private Finney immediately assumed command and led the platoon to a position of defilade.
