    Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 57 (February 25, 1951), Amended by G.O. 128 (1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry), [then Major] Edward L. Farrell, Jr. (ASN: 0-36160), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of the 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 18 December 1950, near Hungnam, Korea, Company I of his battalion was attacked by a numerically superior enemy force, over-running the defense positions, causing many casualties and forcing it to withdraw. Colonel Farrell hurried to the area to which Company I had withdrawn, and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, while under intense small arms and automatic weapons fire, continually exposed himself in effecting the reorganization of the company. By his calm manner he instilled confidence in his men. He then organized and led his men in a counterattack which regained the high ground and inflicted many casualties upon the enemy. The cool, daring leadership and courage displayed by Colonel Farrell reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
