Headquarters, 70th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 38 (May 14, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Grant T. Facer (ASN: 0-550579), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, while serving with Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, ** Infantry Regiment, 70th Infantry Division, on 14 March 1945, near Forbach, France. While he was leading a night reconnaissance party, Lieutenant Facer’s vehicle struck an anti-tank mine, throwing all five occupants to the ground. Dazed, but uninjured, Lieutenant Facer attempted to aid the casualties and while thus engaged stepped on a schu mine, severely maiming one foot. Despite shock, pain, and loss of blood, he crept to the side of a wounded comrade and administered first aid. He then calmly instructed injured members of the party in giving first aid to the casualties. His courageous actions and concern for his fellow soldiers is in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service.
