The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Anthony J. DeMarie (ASN: ER-12248320), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 27 September 1951 in the vicinity of Tondul, Korea. On this date Sergeant DeMarie was assigned to Company A which had the mission of defending a vital hill against an enemy attack. When a numerically superior enemy force assaulted the position, Sergeant DeMarie, a machine gun section leader, immediately coordinated the fire of his weapons to repulse the onrushing hostile force. Exposing himself to the intense enemy fire, he moved about his section checking operation of weapons and offering directions and words of encouragement. During the ensuing action, Sergeant DeMarie personally operated a machine gun and delivered accurate and effective fire, resulting in numerous enemy casualties. His outstanding devotion to duty and leadership were instrumental in repulsing the enemy attack. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant DeMarie on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
