The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Rudolfo (Rudolph) Delgado, Jr. (ASN: RA-18367027), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 28 September 1951, near Kelma-dong, Korea, Private Delgado and a comrade were on a listening post located approximately fifty yards forward of his platoon’s defense perimeter. As Private Delgado challenged an approaching patrol he immediately was showered with a barrage of enemy grenades, one hissing his foxhole and wounding his partner. Ordering the wounded man back to the platoon perimeter for medical treatment, Private Delgado repeatedly exposed himself to the deadly hail of enemy grenades and small arms fire as he returned grenade for grenade and delivered devastating fire on the attacking foe. He fearlessly remained at his post, delivering such havoc among the attackers that the foe was forced to withdraw, apparently thinking they had contacted an incredibly tough combat patrol. After the battle was over at least one enemy dead and two wounded were accounted for. Private Delgado’s outstanding gallantry and unwavering determination were instrumental in holding the outpost for future friendly offensive operations and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
