The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] J. E. V. Davis (ASN: RA-14351273), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 24 April 1952, the 2d Platoon of Company B was assigned the mission of seizing and holding an outpost near Koyangdae, Korea, a position which the enemy had occupied the previous night. Three squads were placed in support of the one assaulting squad led by Sergeant Davis. The assault squad successfully reached the top of the objective and was in the process of clearing the bunkers and trenches on the forward slope of the hill when suddenly two hostile machine guns from well concealed positions began firing a deadly hail of bullets, effectively pinning down the friendly troops. When an automatic rifleman, who had been left on the reverse slope of the hill, came over the hill and began firing with such devastating accuracy, the foe was forced to concentrate all their fire on him. Seizing this opportunity, Sergeant Davis directed his men to pull back one at a time until all the squad had reached the reverse slope. While the automatic rifleman who had delivered the covering fire was trying to pull back, he was seriously wounded and lay in the open terrain where he was in danger of further injury. Disregarding his personal safety, Sergeant Davis courageously moved through the withering hail of fire to the side of the wounded man and, with the aid of a volunteer, carried the man back to safety. After withdrawing his men from the hill and friendly artillery had thoroughly bombarded the hostile positions, Sergeant Davis again led his men in a successful attack on the outpost. The outstanding gallantry and leadership displayed by Sergeant Davis in the face of enemy fire reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
