The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Sergeant First Class] Earl L. Davis (ASN: 0-2262148/RA-6959126), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Regimental Combat Team, 24th Infantry Division, near Kunchon, Korea, on 28 September 1950. After several unsuccessful attacks by his company upon enemy positions on high ground it became apparent that only by drastic action would the position be gained before nightfall. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, he located the enemy machine gun emplacement responsible for holding up the advance, left his position of comparative safety, dashed out under a hail of withering fire and destroyed the hostile gun and its crew. Following his intrepid actions the remainder of his platoon moved out and routed the enemy from his positions and secured the company objective. Lieutenant Davis’ courageous action and fearless example reflect the greatest credit on himself and the United States Infantry.
