The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Alfred E. Davis (ASN: US-55060744), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company M, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 September 1951 in the vicinity of Hoam, Korea. On that date the rifle company to which Private Davis was attached as a machine gunner had secured a strategic hill and was being counterattacked by a numerically superior enemy force. Private Davis, realizing the lack of fire power on the flank of the company, carried his machine gun through intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire to the new position. Upon arrival at this position he noticed that the tripod and water jacket of the weapon had been damaged by hostile fire. Disregarding this fact, he remained in his position and employed a heavy base of fire upon the advancing hostile forces, inflicting numerous casualties upon them. He continued this heroic action until the enemy assault was repulsed. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Davis on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
