The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Floyd W. Darner (ASN: 0-2262310), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 27 November 1950, in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. On that date, he was a platoon leader in an infantry company which had the mission of fighting a defensive action against a numerically superior enemy force. While subjected to heavy mortar, automatic weapons, and small arms fire he continually exposed himself, shouting words of encouragement and aiding in the repulsion of the enemy’s repeated attempts to penetrate the friendly lines, killing many of the enemy with his rifle and hand grenades. These acts of personal heroism were highly inspirational to all his men and greatly responsible for the successful defense of his platoon’s area with a minimum of casualties while inflicting heavy casualties upon the enemy. His outstanding leadership and dauntless courage reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
