The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Richard R. Dailey (ASN: RA-13260976), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 October 1951 in the vicinity of Imokchong, Korea. On this date Private Dailey’s platoon moved out in an attack on strategic enemy-held positions. As they advanced up the slope of a hill toward their objective, enemy resistance grew increasingly heavier until they were forced to dig in for protection from the intense hostile mortar, small arms and automatic weapons fire. Private Dailey, heedless of the extreme danger to his own life, exposed himself to the blaze of enemy fire destroying hostile positions and directing the fire of his comrades. When the platoon sergeant was seriously wounded, Private Dailey, already in one of the foremost positions, assumed command of the platoon. Rallying his comrades with inspired aggressiveness he led them in a valiant assault to the top of the hill, overpowering the deeply entrenched hostile positions. Through his selfless heroism and spirited leadership he inspired his comrades to greater heights of bravery and aided immeasurably in the successful completion of their mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Dailey reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
