The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert W. Curtis (ASN: 0-2262252), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 6 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changyong, Korea. When his company was attacking strongly fortified enemy positions, the well-entrenched enemy directed such devastating fire from all types of weapons upon the attackers that the success of the attack was jeopardized. Noting that the men were hesitant to advance further and that the success of the entire attack was in doubt, Lieutenant Curtis organized a final assault upon the enemy positions. With total disregard for his own life and personal safety, he led his platoon in an attack which completely overran the enemy positions. During this final assault he personally and single-handedly destroyed two enemy machine guns which covered the approaches to the final objective and threatened the success of the operation. In so doing, he exposed himself to the heavy fire in such a courageous manner as to be a great inspiration to the men following him. Lieutenant Curtis’ gallant and heroic actions on this occasion were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflect great credit both upon himself and the military service.
