The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Walter S. Culpepper (ASN: 0-1348481), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 2 and 3 September 1951 in the vicinity of Yanggu, Korea. On these dates Captain Culpepper was given the mission of uniting his unit with friendly forces in order to close an exposed flank. Moving under heavy concentrations of enemy mortar and small arms fire he successfully effected the merger and organized a strong perimeter for the night. The following day his units were again exposed to intense enemy fire. Riding atop a tank, Captain Culpepper accurately directed effective fire upon hostile positions which neutralized numerous enemy bunkers, and enabled his units to continue their advance. At this time incoming aircraft needed a marker in order to effect an air strike against the enemy. Remaining in his position on the tank, Captain Culpepper directed it to within a close proximity of enemy positions and fired a smoke round, marking the target for the aircraft. As a result of the successful air strike, friendly forces were able to secure their objective. The gallantry in action displayed by Captain Culpepper on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
