The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade, [then Private First Class] Alvin Henry Hannah, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, in action against the enemy. On 18 March 1945, at 0600 hours, in Nuremberg, Germany, Technician Fourth Grade Hannah left a covered position to crawl fifty yards under enemy fire toward a pillbox. Throwing a fragmentation hand grenade through a firing port from ten yards away, Technician Fourth Grade Hannah dashed around to the rear door to take one prisoners and find three dead from the explosion. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Fourth Grade, Hannah, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
