Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 67 (March 26, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal James Alton Crawford (ASN: RA-38688131), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 12 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. Corporal Crawford was leading a group of men who were carrying desperately needed supplies and ammunition to Company B’s positions which were then under a fierce enemy assault. On his way to the forward lines, he encountered many of the enemy. Engaging them with his automatic rifle, he killed several and dispersed the remainder. In spite of constant and deadly attacks, he voluntarily made the round trip several times, over the rough, mountainous terrain, in order to keep a steady flow of ammunition to his comrades. On one occasion he single-handedly assaulted and destroyed two hostile machine gun emplacements, inflicting heavy casualties upon the enemy. His heroic actions were largely responsible for the successful defensive stand made by his comrades and were a source of inspiration to the entire organization. The gallantry displayed by Corporal Crawford reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
