The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Joseph E. Cox (ASN: RA-3489811), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 14 August 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, Korea. On that date Company C was in an attack against enemy positions on enemy held Hill 252. In the ensuing battle, Company C was pinned down by a heavy barrage of enemy small arms, grenade and mortar fire, suffering many casualties. Although wounded himself in the initial attack, Sergeant Cox, with complete disregard for personal safety, reorganized the men in the area and began evacuating the wounded. Through his unselfish action, he was instrumental in the saving of many lives that would otherwise have been lost on the field of battle. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Cox reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
