The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Corps of Engineers) Gustav J. Cormier (ASN: 0-1109871), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 2d Engineer Combat Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 25 May 1951, near Chaun-ni, Korea. Captain Cormier was in a motorized convoy which was ambushed by enemy forces. When the enemy fired into the convoy, confusion spread through our units. Captain Cormier quickly organized and directed an orderly firing line and reestablished command. His aggressive manner and courage inspired those around him, and under his leadership effective covering fire enabled an orderly withdrawal from the trap. During this action, Captain Cormier was exposed to the intense enemy fire on the road. He supervised and directed the evacuation of wounded and then led a fighting withdrawal. The leadership and fearless action on the part of Captain Cormier reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
