Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 20 (January 25, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Martin M. Conrad (ASN: RA-16272920), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. On that date his company was attacking strongly defended enemy positions. During the advance the leading elements were pinned down by intense fire from an enemy machine gun. Private Conrad, with complete disregard for his personal safety, moved forward alone with his 57-mm. recoilless rifle and succeeded in forcing the enemy machine gunner to withdraw. He then observed three enemy snipers who were dug in on the right flank of his company. Seizing a rifle he fearlessly charged the hostile positions and, under intense enemy fire, succeeded in killing the three snipers. His intrepidity under fire allowed his company to continue its advance to its objective without suffering more serious casualties. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Corporal Conrad reflects the highest credit upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
