The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Joseph Francis Concannon (ASN: 0-1290035), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 December 1950, in the vicinity of Huksu-ri, Korea, the 2d Battalion of the 7th Infantry was attacked by approximately two enemy regiments. The enemy over-ran one company’s position and seriously endangered the flanks of several others and threatened the battalion command post. Captain Concannon realized the danger to the battalion and, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, left the comparative safety of his foxhole and exposed himself to a veritable hail of enemy fire in an attempt to protect the command post. He reorganized a squad with which he successfully defended the command post until its personnel and material could be evacuated. During the action Captain Concannon was mortally wounded. The courage, initiative and leadership of Captain Concannon are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
