Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 81 (October 28, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal James A. Comfort (ASN: RA-11178762), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 5 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changyong, Korea. On this date, he had the mission, as a member of an anti-tank mine platoon, of clearing mines from a road which was continually subjected to fire from enemy mortars and self-propelled guns. The extremely heavy and accurate fire from the enemy self-propelled guns forced him to take cover each time he began to sweep the mine field. AT last with complete disregard for his own safety, he stood up in the road and began to sweep the field, despite the direct enemy fire. Although this operation continued for at least twenty minutes, he remained in his exposed position until the field had been located. As a result of his actions, the mine field was cleared, and the tanks were able to proceed without damage and continue their combat mission. Corporal Comfort’s gallant and courageous actions reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
