(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant (Retired), [then Staff Sergeant] Cornelius Clark, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as Senior Combat Engineer for Operational Detachment Alpha 217 (ODA-217), 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), during an enemy attack at Camp Plei Me, Vietnam, on or about 19 October 1965. Staff Sergeant Clark helped lead his Team’s defense of the camp during a weeklong siege by the North Vietnamese Army, and personally led a dangerous mission outside the camp to recover badly-needed airdropped supplies that had missed their mark. First Sergeant Clark’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
