Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 432 (August 13, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Arthur A. Charnesky (ASN: RA-13272243), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 31 August 1950, in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. Private Charnesky, an automatic rifleman, was in an outpost on the bank of the Naktong River. During the night the enemy attempted several attacks, but Private Charnesky single-handedly repulsed each attack as he tenaciously held to his position despite overwhelming odds. At dawn there were 37 enemy dead strewn about his position. The company was ordered to withdraw to stronger positions to overcome the enemy’s superiority in numbers. During the withdrawal Private Charnesky maintained effective fire which resulted in more enemy dead and wounded. As he was withdrawing he came upon a wounded member of the company. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he picked up the man’s 57-mm. recoilless rifle and helped his wounded comrade to safety. As he neared friendly lines, Private Charnesky observed an enemy tank approaching. Again with complete disregard for personal safety, he engaged the tank with the rifle and crippled it. He then remained in his position until the rocket launcher team arrived, and destroyed the enemy tank. Private Charnesky’ s complete devotion to duty and comrades and sustained courage in the face of overwhelming odds reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
