Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 146 (June 15, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Anthony J. Castiglia (ASN: RA-16335104), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 13 February 1951, in the vicinity of Chipyong-ni, Korea. Company G was defending part of the regimental defensive perimeter against a numerically superior enemy force. Private Castiglia, an ammunition bearer with the Weapons Squad, made repeated trips through intense enemy fire to the ammunition dump. On one of his return trips he noticed several enemy creeping toward his machine gun position. Realizing that his comrades were unaware of this sneak attack, he immediately charged the enemy with hand grenades and rifle fire, killing two and wounding several of the enemy before he was mortally wounded. His actions undoubtedly saved the lives of his comrades. The gallantry displayed by Private Castiglia reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
