The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert E. Canfield (ASN: ER-31476010), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 March 1951, near Uijongbu, Korea, the second platoon, Company C, 1st Battalion, launched an attack against enemy position on Hill 337. While moving up the hill, Private Canfield was subjected to hostile grenade fire but, with no regard for his own safety, he courageously continued his advance. Nearing the enemy position, he fixed bayonet and then, although wounded by fragments from an exploding grenade, he assaulted the entrenchment, bayoneting two enemy soldiers and causing a third to flee. After receiving treatment for his wounds, Private Canfield returned to the scene of action and participated in the attack until again severely wounded. The exceptional gallantry and courageous devotion to duty displayed by Private Canfield reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
