Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 521 (November 17, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Robert A. Cain (ASN: US-55002769), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 October 1951 Company G had the mission of seizing and securing Hill 400, located in the vicinity of Chorwon, Korea. During the initial assault, a severe barrage of enemy artillery, mortar, grenade, small arms and automatic weapons fire was brought to bear upon Sergeant Cain’s platoon, the assault platoon, forcing a withdrawal. Even though seriously wounded, Sergeant Cain, refusing medical aid and evacuation, voluntarily remained in his exposed position to provide covering fire for the withdrawal of his platoon and for the evacuation of the wounded. Only after assuring himself that all of his platoon had withdrawn and that all wounded had been evacuated did Sergeant Cain withdraw. Upon returning to the platoon assembly area, Sergeant Cain, still refusing medical aid and evacuation, reorganized his platoon and again led them in their assault. Only after the platoon had secured their objective and the defense had been firmly integrated did Sergeant Cain permit himself to be evacuated. The bravery, tenacity and extreme devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Cain reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
