Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 381 (August 26, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Willie A. Bush (ASN: RA-37690156), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 June 1951, Sergeant Bush, leader of the Third Platoon, was leading his unit in an assault against approximately one company of enemy troops entrenched on a hill near Yonchong, Korea, when one of his squads became pinned down by intense fire from a hostile machine gun. Heedless of the heavy fire, Sergeant Bush voluntarily advanced over the exposed terrain in an effort to remove this obstacle in the path of advance. Hurling grenades into the enemy emplacement, he single-handedly silenced the machine gun, enabling his platoon to move forward once more. Rallying the men, he continued the assault and drove the foe from the hill. Sergeant Bush’s inspirational gallantry and superb leadership reflect high credit upon himself and the military service.
