Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 39 (1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Anton C. Beer (ASN: 0-370094), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 164th Infantry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action on 25 October 1942, at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. Lieutenant Beer, accompanied by two enlisted men, proceeded beyond the front lines to render aid and to bring back several wounded Marines who were pinned down by strong enemy fire and cut off from their organizations. The deed was performed under heavy enemy fire and without adequate fire protections from their own lines. The three succeeded in loading several of the Marines into a vehicle and evacuating them to safety beyond the lines. First Lieutenant Beer’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
