The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class James Hilton Jefferys (ASN: RA-13307256), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. Private First Class Jefferys volunteered to man a .50 caliber machine gun on a tank supporting a platoon attack near Sechon-ni, Korea, 1 September 1950. During the attack, heavy enemy small arms and machine gun fire opened on the unit and concentrated on the tank. Since the tank’s main guns could not deliver effective fire because of the terrain, Private First Class Jefferys remained with his gun, knocked out one enemy machine gun and continued to inflict serious casualties on the hostile force until he, himself, was killed. Private First Class Jeffery’s exceptionally courageous devotion to duty and outstanding soldierly skill reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
