The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Clarence Edward Armbrister (ASN: US-55149589), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 31 July 1952, near Koyangdae, Korea, Corporal Armbrister was placed in charge of a machine gun section attached to Company G and given the mission of providing support fire for the defense of an outpost known as “Kelly” against an expected enemy counterattack. Realizing that the positions they then occupied would not allow the section to provide maximum support fire to the rifle squads nor would the positions provide much protective cover for his men and weapons, Corporal Armbrister began searching for positions in which to relocate the section. As he moved about the area the enemy bombarded the outpost with a tremendous volume of artillery and mortar fire but, undaunted, Corporal Armbrister continued his search for new positions. After finding suitable locations he returned and fearlessly led one gun crew through the withering enemy fire to the new position. While attempting to place a second gun crew in position Corporal Armbrister was hit and mortally wounded by an exploding enemy shell. The outstanding gallantry and unwavering determination displayed by Corporal Armbrister reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
