The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Morton F. Arendt (ASN: 0-1115474), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 10th Field Artillery, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the night of 28 – 29 November 1950, at Sachang-ni, Korea, Lieutenant Arendt played a major role in the artillery support furnished for the first battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, when attacked by an enemy force of regimental size. The perimeter was attacked from all sides with artillery, mortar, machine gun, and small arms fire. The Battery Fire Direction Center was hit by mortar fire immediately severing control to the perimeter defense and the artillery emplacements. At this critical time, Lieutenant Arendt took command, although exposed directly to hazardous enemy fire, he moved up and down the line coordinating and directing the fire of automatic weapons and small arms. He also supervised battery local defense. Lieutenant Arendt, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, continued the above actions for five hours. By his actions he materially aided in the prevention of the defense from being overrun by fanatical enemy onslaughts. The gallant actions of Lieutenant Arendt reflects great credit upon himself and exemplify the highest traditions of the military service.
